The Department of Biostatistics and Division of Research, JIPMER, Puducherry is conducting a virtual workshop on Sample Size Estimation in Health Research (SSE-2022) from 6 and 7 April 2022.
About the Department of Biostatistics, JIPMER, Puducherry
The Department of Biostatistics is actively engaged in Teaching Research Methodology, Biostatistics and Demography to the Undergraduates, Postgraduate Medical & Paramedical students and trainees. Regular statistical consultations and guidance are provided to the postgraduate residents and students, faculty members, PhD scholars and staffs in various departments of the Institute. The Department is conducting M.Sc. course and Doctoral Programme in Biostatistics and also regular training programs in Research Methodology and Biostatistics. The faculty members of the department are also regularly involved as resource persons in the various workshops and CMEs on Research Methodology, Biostatistics, Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis etc., conducted by National Institutes. The Department is regularly conducting JIPMER Research Leadership Mentoring Program (JRLMP) for the faculty members in Medical Colleges in the country.
About the Workshop
Sample size is an essential component in any research and its estimation is one of the most crucial steps in designing a study. The main purpose of the sample size estimation is to determine the minimum number of subjects/participants required in a study to derive valid conclusions with a prefixed precision, level of significance and power. Sample size refers to the number of participants or observations included in a study. The size of a sample influences the precision of the estimates and the power of the study. Sample size which is too small may produce inconclusive results and too large will waste scarce resources and it could expose more participants than what is necessary. This workshop is proposed to enhance the knowledge of the researchers regarding the importance of sample size and essentials in its estimation along with sample size estimation methods in different scenarios added with hands on training.
