Job Description:

Responsibilities

• Prepare the OT before surgical procedures by setting up instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
• Assist in arranging surgical tables, lighting, and other necessary apparatus.
• Ensure all equipment is functioning properly before surgery (e.g., suction machines, cautery units, monitors).
• Assist in positioning patients correctly as per surgical requirements.
• Hand over instruments and materials to the surgical team during procedures (under supervision).
• Ensure proper use and handling of surgical instruments.
• Help with the cleaning and disinfection of the OT and equipment after surgery.
• Support safe shifting of patients from OT to recovery/post-operative areas.
• Assist in the collection and dispatch of specimens (biopsy, cultures, etc.).
• Follow strict aseptic and sterile techniques at all times.
• Adhere to infection control protocols for cleaning, waste disposal, and instrument handling.
• Ensure safe disposal of sharps and contaminated materials.
• Monitor and report the availability of OT consumables and instruments to senior technicians.
• Assist in maintaining inventory records and instrument logs.
• Report any malfunction or damage of equipment immediately.
• Takes inventory of the area instruments and medical supplies as per the responsibility allotted by the Lead Nurse specialist.
• Reports to the Lead Nurse Specialist problem faced in caring and safety of the patients.
• Initiates Surgical Safety Checklist before surgery.
• Sets up, checks, connects and adjusts surgical equipments prior to the surgery based on the surgeon requirements, equipment needs and functionality.
• Assists in preparing operating rooms and patients prior to surgery.
• Meets the patient prior to surgery in the operating area with the scrub nurse and checks whether they have any conditions that can cause problems under anesthesia.
• Monitors patients and their vital signs before, during and after the procedures.
• Provides technical assistance to surgeons, scrub nurse, circulating nurse and anesthetists.
• Cleans and restocks the operating room, arranging instrument, supplies and equipments as per the hospital operating room protocol.
• Positions patients for surgical and anaesthetic treatments.
• Takes responsibility in maintaining the equipments to the best of usage and reports to higher authority if breakdown happens.
• Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms as per the protocol of the hospital.
