Introduction To The NEET Exam
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the single all-India entrance examination conducted every year for admission in various medical undergraduate courses including MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BYNS, BUMS, BSMS, BVSc & AH, and nursing courses.
NEET-UG was first conducted on 5th May 2013 replacing the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and many other regional pre-medical exams conducted by states and various medical colleges. However, due to lawsuits being filed against the exam, it could not be held in 2014 and 2015. It was reintroduced in 2016 and since then is being held as a single medical entrance test.
According to the NMC Act (2019), the NEET Undergraduate (UG) is the only entrance exam for admission to all central, state, and private medical institutes across the country unlike when All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) had their separate exams.
NEET UG is considered one of the toughest and most competitive exams in India. A total of 15 lakh candidates registered for NEET-UG and over 17 lakh candidates registered in the year 2021. In this article, the authors have attempted to offer a comprehensive overview of the exam.[1]
